David Buxton and Kate Swatridge of decisionLab (DSEs sister company specialising on OR approaches to problem solving) are pleased to announce they have been awarded with a tender to become statistical advisors to WRAP.
WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Program) is a not for profit organization operating in the UK and dedicated to encourage and support businesses and consumers to be more efficient in their use of materials and embrace recycling. WRAP’s vision is a world without waste, where resources are used sustainably.
As statistical advisors, they will be asked to bring into play their know-how and ability to provide independent advice on topics such as sampling design; appropriate methods for analyzing different data sets; suitable methods for scaling data and for modeling; time series analysis; agent-based modeling, systems dynamics and other similar operational research techniques.
“It is both a privilege and a pleasure to have been chosen as technical advisors and we look forward to applying our knowledge and expertise and contribute in our way to a more sustainable future”
David Buxton
The tender is for a period of 4 years and is awarded in collaboration with Data Build.
Dave Buxton is a real simulation enthusiast so when it comes to delivering training he aims to make sure the delegates leave both inspired and technically prepared to deliver simulation projects in their own organisations.
And student feedback from the recent 2-day training in Agent-Based modelling on behalf of the OR society proves this!
The course focused on providing the what, when and where relating to modelling and simulation and it was very well received. Based on a delegate questionnaire completed at the end of the event, David provided a productive and interactive atmosphere, and the course was relevant, helpful and of high quality. From the comments of the participants, it seemed that much appreciated was the tutor’s clear knowledge on the subject as well as
his effective and clear teaching techniques.
Here’s some of the highlights of the delegate feedback survey -
“Great course!”
“Good to have theoretical side plus experience from practice, really
reinforced learning.”
Course content – 9.5 out of 10
Teaching – 9.2 out of 10
All delegates concluded that the training was productive, influential and
it largely met its goals.

Dave’s looking forward to delivering the course again in 2012, and with the
same enthusiasm and dedication!
As a continuation of last year’s successful event, dse Consulting along with AnyLogic is organizing a 3-day course aimed at providing simulation enthusiasts with the necessary knowledge, understanding and skills to become experts in advanced multi-paradigm modeling.
This year’s new and improved training, run by one of UK’s leading practitioners of Agent Based Modeling and Simulation, is focused on delivering hands-on experience on problem solving and modeling and introducing the exciting new features of AnyLogic 6.6 powerful simulation tool.
In particular you should expect
- Structured guidance through the steps of structuring a simulation problem, selecting a modeling paradigm, building models in each paradigm, and linking your models in a larger, hybrid model
- Practical exercises and user-friendly explanations
- Free professional assistance with your own AnyLogic projects and tips on solving modelling challenges
Both new users and experienced modelers are welcome to exploit this opportunity to establish the skills necessary to succeed and define a distinct competitive advantage.
The training event will be held on 24-26 April in the heart of London.

Whether you remain unconvinced about the incremental benefits of ABMS over more conventional techniques, or you just can’t see how it could improve strategic decision making in practice in your organisation, we need your skepticism!
By challenging us to convince you at OR53, you’ll contribute to our market research. In return, we’re offering a reward: your chance to win a case of champagne.
It’s really easy to get involved. Simply attend Dave Buxton’s presentation at noon on 6th September (Conference Suite 1a), complete a challenge form and bring it to our stand at OR53, where we’ll be building basic models in response to selected challenges.
We’ll announce the winner after the conference and share any interesting insight from the exercise too.
XJ Technologies has taken on board feedback from user surveys, client suggestions and evolving needs to introduce a raft of new features to AnyLogic.
Download a FREE trial copy for 14 day’s unrestricted use, 14 day’s complimentary support from dseConsulting and a no obligation opportunity to fully assess the benefits AnyLogic 6.6.0 for your organisation.
And, don’t forget, we can design, build and project manage your model , either until your internal team is up to speed or, if you haven’t the resources in-house, we can run an entire project on your behalf to help you achieve the benefits of AnyLogic and ABMS efficiently and cost-effectively. dseConsulting adds Agent-Based Modelling and Simulation (ABMS) expertise to Fair Dynamics client offering, in a new collaboration.
Fair Dynamics, founded by former managers, academics and experienced consultants, to offer strategic and operational consulting to improve business performance using on system dynamics has entered into a partnership with dseConsulting, founded by the UK’s leading consulting practitioner of ABMS.
Luigi Geppert, Director of Fair Dynamics commented “Fair Dynamics is known as a state of the art consultancy specialising in simulation. We are now planning to increase competencies by including Agent-Based Modelling techniques. We were looking for expert partners, DSE fulfils the role perfectly and we look forward to a successful collaboration over the long term.” A sentiment echoed by David Buxton, MD, dseConsulting.
dseConsulting joins an elite network of collaborators providing best of breed solutions, innovation and competitive advantage to clients of Critical Software Technologies.
According to Business Week, Critical is part of a group which is in the top 500 in Europe in terms of growth. dse Consulting’s record of delivering significant new insights and strategic risk management tools for clients in complex environments, including aerospace and defence, closely matches Critical Software Technologies strength in safety-critical and complex systems for these industries.
As a partner of Critical Software Technologies, dseConsulting will contribute to the company’s success by applying modelling and simulation techniques to reduce the risks inherent in strategic decision.
This year’s 17th Young OR conference drew an audience of around 200 delegates many of whom took part in lively debate around the practical applications, role and future of OR.
As well as presenting a paper on Pedestrian Simulation, dseConsulting’s David Buxton delivered a popular training session for Simul8’s new, user-friendly take on Agent Based Modelling & Simulation software.
The UK’s leading exponent of ABMS went on to offer a tongue in cheek insight into life as a consultant.
Challenging Young OR professionals to put themselves forward for tv’s The Apprentice, David suggested that qualifications and experience are not pre-requisite’s when the general public, and even leading industry figures like Lord Sugar, can be so easily impressed by the most basic of mathematical ability.
And he cited the need to raise the profile of OR and what it can uniquely deliver for businesses, which no longer appear to appreciate the role OR can play in an organisation or indeed the benefit of the discipline.
Join the debate by sharing your experience of OR in industry, government or academia below.
Following feedback from the most recent AnyLogic open training course in London this April, dseConsulting has introduced a Pre-Training Orientation day.
This exploration of the role, power and potential of ABMS, will help analysts new to the technique to understand when and why to apply it and is the ideal preliminary to the intense, practical nature of the AnyLogic training course.

A meeting of the OR Society’s Simulation Special Interest Group this Spring saw David Buxton present to an audience of Academic and Business researchers on the practical application of Agent Based Modelling and Simulation.
Ever-popular for his accessible, collaborative, audience-friendly style David discussed his experiences and the challenges and successes faced by his clients before exploring those facing members of the audience in healthcare, economics and business consultancy.
Of particular interest was the collaboration of an academic institution and pharmaceutical company exploring new ways to apply Agent-Based Models in healthcare.
