The Challenge

Tesco's Marketing Analysis & Insight teams were spending a significant proportion of time deliberating how best to present data for their own use, to reveal trends, as well as for senior management, to communicate insight in a clear and accessible format.

Existing tools for reporting were so bespoke and complex that they were difficult to cascade to new users and, when a member of team left the department, a substantial degree of knowledge was lost with them.

Tesco needed to release time to allow analysts to allocate more resources to producing intelligent insight and less on simply data interrogation and reporting.

Having identified a number of repeat processes and reports that were causing bottlenecks, Tesco wanted to streamline analysis and outsource some of the more mundane tasks to HST (an India-based Tesco partner), leaving the in-house team to focus on more challenging topics.

dseConsulting Solution

dseConsulting worked with Tesco's team to gain a thorough understanding of the analytical requirement, map out the current reporting process and identify how to best represent the available data, before implementing recommendations.

Although different for each report, dseConsulting focussed on automating the process from extracting the data from the warehouse, to manipulating the data in excel and presenting information both for investigation by the analyst and for presentation.

The Business Benefit

dseConsulting delivered fully automated reports with VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) to ensure easy accessibility and transferability.

As a result of the success of this project, dseConsulting is now working with other marketing teams including Club Card, Pricing and Customer Insight to deliver similar efficiencies.
